It is a great first carving and we cannot wait to see what Lisa does next. Thanks to Ron her husband for the photos.

Thompson's Powertex Sculptures
Posted on October 9, 2009
The pictures are examples of what an artist like Brigette Thompson can do when she explores her creative side and has a deadline to work to. Brigette lives in the Sudbury area and had a very successful showing of her work last weekend. Brigette and Moe Thompson also, ran a Powertex class showing how to create your very own garden sculptures. Bridge and Moe will be here at Nutmeg Carving Shop on November 21st and 22nd of this year showing how you can create your own sculpture.
Great job and thanks for sharing your work with us and our readers. We all look forward to your classes.
See you soon from the gang at Nutmeg Wood Working and Carving Shop.

New Elliot Deighton Pics From Caricature Carving Class
Posted on August 18, 2009
As a follow-up to the Caricature Carving Class instructed by Eldon Humphreys, Elliot Deighton supplied a couple of photos of the carving he finished after the class was completed. The caricature in the photo is a great example of what can be accomplished with a great teacher and artist like Eldon Humphreys and a great student like Elliot.
Again thanks for the photos. And for all you budding and accomplished artists please feel free to take Elliot's lead and send photos of your work to Nutmeg so we can share it with all of you.
Thanks,
From the crew at Nutmeg
Automata Animation by Alexander Mergold
Posted on July 22, 2009
Attached is an animation of an automaton creation that a new customer of ours produced after purchasing his Proxxon Scroll Saw DS 115/E. The reason for that particular size of saw is that he lives in an apartment, but you can see from the animation that there is no limit to his creativity. It is a wonderful piece of work and we invite you to click on the following links to see more of the amazing creations Alexander has done and are also for sale. Our Links page will also include these websites, just look for Alexander Mergold's name.

New Photos from Elliott Deighton
Posted on July 20, 2009
The photos are examples of Elliott Deighton's latest work and his one photo of the elf with the fishtail hat gives you a hint of his other passion, fly fishing. They are great pieces of work and considering you only started over the last year or two I can see you are going to be producing even better work in the future. Thanks for sharing the photos with us and hope others will also send us photos of their work so that we can share it with all of you.
Thanks,

Photos and Review of Basic Full Body Caricature Class
Posted on July 7, 2009
On the weekend of June 27 - 28, 2009 a Basic Full Body Caricature Class was held at Nutmeg Wood Working and Carving Shop and was lead by Eldon Humphreys, a Master Carver that specializes in full figure caricatures. The photo of the man riding his bike and the Nurse with the biggest needle we have ever seen are just two of Eldon's creations. These two carvings plus the sample project provided inspiration to the students that attended. Just as in Honky’s class, students here ranged in skill level and over the two day course Eldon was able to provide a different perspective of how to complete their carvings. In fact they were so successful Eldon was able to give them a brief lesson on how to paint the projects.
Based on the warm words and comments received, all had a great time and some have managed to complete new projects based on what they have learned from Eldon. We have since received an email from Eldon that read:
“Hi Dave and Percy,
Just a short note to thank you for all your support in putting on the carving class. I enjoyed working with you, and look forward to doing it again sometime. You have a great facility for classes, and the students seem to feel comfortable attending. Thanks again... good carving, Eldon”
We enjoyed having you Eldon and we look forward to running the class again and in fact we have heard from your students and some of their friends that they too are looking forward to attending another class. So keep checking our class schedule for the next dates of Eldon's class.

Photos and Review of Head Caricature Carving Class
Posted on July 7, 2009
On May 2, 2009 we at Nutmeg ran a class titled Head Caricature Carving Class by Honky Hawrtsio. A total of 7 students attended and their skill ranged from beginner to skilled carver. The topic was how to carve a complete head that could be incorporated into a number of other projects such as walking sticks, bottle stops, canes etc.
A photo of the head that was completed by all the students - and rather well I might add - is one of the photos included in this article. Everyone had a great time and learned a lot in a short period of time and some have gone on to creating similar style heads as a result of the course and Honky's unique style.
A great time was had by all and many thanks go out to the students, Honky for the participation and Elliot Deighton for his participation and the fantastic photos.

Carving News and Photos from Elliott Deighton
Posted on March 9, 2009
Hi Dave,
Here are the pictures of the 3 elves I've done so far.
They are based on Marc Gargac's article in the special Christmas edition of Wood Carving Illustrated. Despite the Pine looking grain, the wood is Basswood and the blanks, which you very kindly cut out for me, measure 2-1/4 x 2-1/4 x 7 inches long. As you will remember, they are cut in a triangle and carved on the corner. The finish is very thin wash of acrylic paint then dipped in Boiled Linseed Oil with a top coat or two of spray satin lacquer.
If anyone is interested in carving these guys and they don't have the issue of the magazine I can leave a copy of the pattern with you the next time I'm in the shop.
Continued success and good luck. It is my good fortune to have such a great shop so close to home.
Elliott

Letter and Photos from Elliott Deighton
Posted on February 19, 2009
Hi Percy, David and the rest of the Gang,
I thought you might like some pictures that I took of my very first carving attempts.
I did a few pages of expressions in my sketch book just to get the proportions right and to see how many whacky expressions I could come up with. I started carving on January 7th and by the end of the month I had rattled off these 22 little faces. They are done on 1 inch square basswood and I guess I'm hooked, much to my wife's chagrin. You see I'm a fly tier too so now as well as fur and feathers all over the house, there are wood chips too!
The pictures are in sequence from left to right and top to bottom so with Xpressions 1 through 6, the top left face is my very first completed carving, the one below is #2 and so on. 19 through 22 is actually on the back of 7 through 18 (It finally dawned on me, why waste wood, just carve on the back).
What a blast this carving is. I'll bring my little faces in the next time we come to the store. I have a feeling I need a few more tools. Doesn't everyone?
Cheers
Elliott Deighton
Hamilton Wood Show
Posted on February 4, 2009
Nutmeg Wood Working and Carving Shop was in attendance at the Hamilton Wood Show on January 25th to the 27th of 2009 and was one of the sponsors for the wood carving competition which was excellent by all accounts, from beginner to expert and from young to more mature, each piece entered in the competition was excellent - all should be proud. I know we were proud just being a small part of the weekend.
Attached is a couple of the winners of the show and one very special thank you letter. We at Nutmeg are happy to encourage all to enjoy the craft and hope more like Ken and the others continue to enjoy wood working for years to come.

Nutmeg’s Grand Opening
Posted on June 7, 2008
Nutmeg Wood Working and Carving Shop Inc. opened its doors at their Grand opening on June 7, 2008
Many friends, family, extended family and members of various carving clubs were in attendance as Megan Hornblow, along with Bert Hirt cut the Grand Opening Ribbon.
Gorilla CNC of London, Ontario participated by showing various computer demos of the CNC programs that are available to all skill levels of operating CNC while Mike Kiers of the Cable Guy provided photographs of people who attended. Steve Stevenson imported the photos into Photo V carve, showing how easy it is to create images to be used with CNC machines.
We wish to thank all who came out and we look forward to many years of serving the budding and accomplished artist.
David Hornblow,
President
